The Search Process:
The Search Committee contacted the American Baptist Churches of NE on October 22, 2017 to ask for resumes for our pastoral position. We provided ABC with the church survey results in what the congregation wants in a pastor. Interested candidates contacted ABC of NE and were screened to match with the needs of GBC. Through prayer, extensive candidate research and interviews, we have extended the invitation for this candidate to come to Gibbon Baptist Church. The Search Committee is announcing Rev. Dr. Jon Wymer as a candidate for Gibbon Baptist Church’s pastoral position. Pastor Jon grew up in the church as a son and grandson of Baptist ministers. The Bible has always been a very important part of his life. Pastor Jon believes God has called him to pastoral ministry.
Education has been a priority in Pastor Jon’s life and indicates his commitment and drive. He was homeschooled as a child and later earned a Bachelor’s of Arts in History. He has gone on and earned his Master of Divinity in Church Ministries and last year completed his Doctor of Ministry in Preaching. He was also honored to be selected to take the US Army Command and Staff study this past spring and graduated with honors. Pastor Jon recently has been ordained as an American Baptist Minister.
Pastor Jon and his wife, Tiffani, have been married since May of 2005. They have 3 children, Olivia (age 10), Sophia (age 8), and Noah (age 6). Tiffani is also expecting and is due in May. Pastor Jon has served his entire ministry career in Nebraska, and they are excited for this opportunity to remain in
this great state, close to family, and raise their children in a small town, such as Gibbon. Tiffani is a stay-at-home mom, but also substitute teaches elementary school occasionally. She is originally from Scotia, NE and has lived in Nebraska her whole life.
One of the aspects that appeals to our church about Pastor Jon’s sermon time, is his ability to uniquely connect to the youth during the morning sermon. Not only does he capture the children’s attention, he is also intentional about preparing the adults for the message. His dream for church is to see growth. He likes to help individuals discover their gifts and strengths. Pastor Jon has the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing and the ability to interpret the Bible creatively in a way that opens up the text in new ways for people who have been around church a long time.
Pastor Jon is currently a Brigade Chaplain with the Nebraska National Guard. He is the supervisor of four other chaplains in the guard. Through this experience he is equipped to serve others. We are excited to support him in this mission and together we see this as an extension of our ministry in the church and not a competition to our church. This ministry will open a lot of doors to reach people our church has not been able to connect with before. Pastor Jon is excited to train up leaders in our church to use their gifts while he is typically serving his six Sundays for drill and one or two others for his annual training.
Through his training, Pastor Jon has been equipped to provide counseling on many levels. From pre-marital, marital, suicide prevention, and grief counseling, he is ready to be available to the congregation in all aspects of doing life together.
